MHD at Alan d – Edward Hemmings shares his experience
As our new Global Ambassador, Edward Hemmings of Alan d Hairdressing Education will be making regular contributions to the MHD blog page. In his first post, Edward describes how he’s using playlist to revolutionise training at Alan d Hairdressing Education.
Take it away, Edward!
On the hunt for technology to add real value
At Alan d, we specialise in training the hairdressers and barbers of the future. With academies in both London and Ipswich, we currently have close to 200 students – including 20 new starters this month – and 10 educators.
We’re always on the hunt for resources to support learners, empowering them to achieve the best results and kick start their careers. These days, we’re constantly bombarded with information about technology that will make life easier. Yet how many apps do you have on your phone or tablet that you’ve completely forgotten about and don’t use at all?
For me, that’s the genuine test. I didn’t want MHD to be an add-on. It needed to become an essential cog in the education we deliver at MHD – something that would empower both trainers and trainees.
From the outset, it’s been clear that playlist is a useful resource for students and educators – with the potential to add value to every area of the business. Thanks to playlist, my educators now have the ability to create personalised learning journeys for every Alan d student.
Introducing playlist to educators and trainees
For playlist to succeed, our team of educators needed to understand its value. That’s why – following an initial team meeting – I decided to give all of them access to MHD with their own individual accounts. The buzz at the follow-up meeting meant that I knew I was onto a winner.
At this point, we worked together to create playlists for the various modules that we teach, including cutting, finishing, colouring and barbering. By using playlist, we’ve been able to avoid confusing our students. Instead, they’re challenged by tutorials that are relevant to their specific hairdressing or barbering level.
As a team, we decided that MHD training should be delivered to students in groups, rather than individually. This approach has been incredibly successful, as it enables the group to ‘play’ and ‘discover’ together – chatting about what they’ve found interesting, challenging and particularly inspirational. In fact, as the students return to their salons each week, the other apprentices are coming in asking when it’s their turn for an MHD session!
Creating a buzz in the educational environment
Overall the reaction has been so positive on every level.
Our trainers have something really exciting to share with the students, who benefit by having continuous access to great education. And their salons benefit too as they have a resource that they can continue to endorse and back up in their weekly model nights.
As our Academy Principal, Kevin, puts it: “Our January induction was the largest for a good while and it was so great to see a large group of students on their phones for good reason.”
I’m really excited to see the benefits of playlist unfold over the coming months, and I’m looking forward to witnessing the inevitable boost in end point assessment results.
