Text / Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 31 December 2010

MyHairDressers.com wishes all our members a happy and prosperous 2011. And to make it even more so, here are some of our top tips to ensure that 2011 is your best hairdressing year yet!

Set Realistic Goals

Everyone wants to progress in their life, but wishful thinking of becoming the next Vidal Sassoon by the summer is probably not going to happen for most of us.

Set yourself a realistic goal for the end of the year, and then set small goals along the way. So, if you want a promotion in your salon, work out what it takes, and how you need to improve throughout the year and give yourself monthly tasks and deadlines to achieve it. It’s important to make small permanent changes that build on each other to maintain sustainability.

Educate Yourself

Obviously MyHairDressers.com is your first choice in education, but as before, don’t binge on videos - you won’t remember it. Take time to learn each technique slowly and methodically. Watch a video and practice the haircut, colouring tutorial or styling technique so you know precisely what you’re doing and why. That way your skills will increase exponentially and you’ll soon find that you’ll become a better hairdresser faster than if you watched everything during one exhausting marathon session. If you are an educator, then work out a structured lesson plan using our videos that your students can stick to, follow and build upon.

Network

Hairdressing professionals are naturally people people! If you work in a Salon you are constantly talking to clients, making them feel at ease and making their time with you an enjoyable experience. If you are a tutor, your students listen to your advice and accept your wisdom and expertise. Use that talent outside the salon or academy to spread the word about you and the business you work in. The increase in business will bring you more money, and you never know where new friendships will lead to.

Expand Your Mind

Our contributors share their hairdressing inspirations with us in our interview series, and they constantly look for new inspiration in art, music, fashion, photography and nature. Aveda’s Bruno Elorrioroz even finds inspiration for new hair colours in a cup of tea! Take time out to visit galleries, read magazines, take a walk and look around you constantly. The world is always moving and so should you.

Challenge Yourself

People are at their best when they are challenged. You’ll be amazed at the things you are capable of if you only try. It’s helpful to have mentors and people around you that push you forward to limits of excellence you never thought possible. Never settle for second best, when with a little more application you could be the best.

MyHairDressers.com believes that all hairdressing professionals should have the opportunity to be the best they can be, no matter where they live, how rich or poor. Our website is designed to teach you the basic hairdressing skills along with the advanced techniques to challenge you and inspire you. We are setting new standards in global hairdressing education, to give students and colleges everywhere the opportunity to learn from the world’s best hairdressers.
