Text / Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 21 January 2011

MyHairDressers.com tries to answer any questions you have about your hairdressing training, and welcomes the opportunity for our loyal members to contact us for advice and guidance. This question from MyHairDressers.com subscriber Aaron Johnson was so good and addresses issues that we’re sure many people working in a salon or training to cut hair at college or cosmetology school must encounter, that we felt it only fair to share it with you.

Dear MyHairDressers.com,

I have been working on the basic concave layer that Stacey Broughton does, I also watched The Grand hair cut by Lee Stafford. I have only been doing hair for two years. It seems the Grand is easier than the basic concave layer shape. Yet one is considered advanced and the other basic.

I am taking your New Years advice and just focusing on a couple shapes for the year. I am working on graduated bobs and one length hair cuts and long layers, since long layers is what everyone wants in Malibu. So of course I am the only one in the salon that does the concave layer shape from MyHairDressers.com.

Do you think I should practice the grand or the basic concave? The grand is a concave as well, isn't it?

I am sure hair texture plays a role and the higher elevations would be better for thicker hair, and more graduated for finer.

Eventually I would like to combine the two and make it my own.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron Johnson, Malibu CA, USA

We agree that The Grand is probably an easier cut than the Concave Layer. In fact many of the Basic haircuts are difficult. The way the site is structured – from Headblock Basics to Basics and through Classics etc to Advanced is to give you a solid foundation in technique and shape before introducing you to more creative hairdressing, which are designed in a looser way so you can develop your own creativity.

So the idea of the Basics is to teach you the essential techniques and shapes used in hairdressing – so these are all the basic techniques you will need to master and they’re not all easy! In fact, the Headblocks and the Basics include some of the hardest techniques and shapes to master because they are pure techniques. The Basics are there to teach you to cut and see pure shapes first, which will then aid you in applying them according to the client’s suitability.

Recognising the suitability of a particular shape for a client’s hair type, head shape and bone structure is what will separate you from the competition, make your clients look beautiful and keep them coming back. It is also your foundation to everything that follows.

From there you will be in a much stronger position to master the Classics and move on to the Creatives and Advanced, all of which incorporate multiple variations of the techniques you learn in the Basics. If you like, the Basics teach you how to do it, the other categories put it all together, with Classics covering salon favourites and day to day essentials, while Creative and Advanced feature fashion forward shapes and are designed to inspire you to put your own creative spin on hair as well as keep you up to date.

To sum up then, we would recommend learning the Basic Concave first. Along with some of the other layered shapes, if they are what your marketplace requires. From there, you’re on the right track to combine the techniques from the Concave and The Grand and truly make them your own.
