Feature - Graham Oglesby and Tracey Sajno Interview

Stockport College Programme Coordinators and tutors Graham Oglesby and Tracey Sajno, spent two days in the studio recording content for our upcoming City &Guilds NVQ module. In this interview they share their experiences and tell us more about the upcoming show with Stacey Broughton in Stockport.

What’s the reasoning behind the haircuts you’ve produced?
Graham: “My whole thought process was to produce a series of looks that showcased City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 and Level 3 work. We’ve used some classic techniques – short graduation, classic short layer, uniform layer. We’ve revamped the classic shake and done a classical mid length bob. It was important for me to showcase those looks so that the learners could see that from the techniques they are taught in Level 2, they can cross reference and contemporise them when they move into a Level 3 environment.”

How have the two days in the studio been?
Graham: “I was very nervous, because it’s been about 15 years since I last saw Stacey. He was one of my mentors at Sassoon, and I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for him. But it turned out to be really pleasant and he made me feel really comfortable.”

Tracey: “It feels like coming home when I come to MyHairDressers, you’re made to feel so welcome. Working with such like-minded people who speak your language and understand where you’re coming from and are so appreciative of what you do, is really enjoyable. I enjoyed doing the session work for the camera - styling the hair and showing just how versatile the haircuts are and it’s just a material that can be worked in so many different ways. It’s just fantastic, I love it.”

Tell us some more about the forthcoming show.
Graham: “We are doing a launch show on 27 April at the Stockport Plaza to announce the partnership between Stockport College and MyHairDressers.com, with Stacey Broughton as guest artist. This partnership is very unique and hopefully will set a trend for other colleges and hairdressers in the future.“

Tracey: “The Stockport Plaza is a beautiful Art Deco building that’s been completely restored and is a fantastic venue to showcase the partnership. We have cinema screens to show off the website and we have two sessions of Stacey, Graham and myself on stage, and the amazing Paul Seaman is coming over from Paris to do the make-up, so it should be really good.

“We’re excited beyond belief, and we’re really gearing it up around the students and the tutors because they’re the future of the industry. The whole show is based around what would be expected of Level 2 and 3 students to produce, but with a twist. We want to show how versatile hair is as a material – it’s the most important accessory you’ll ever wear.”

Graham: “I’m excited and nervous, because I hold Stacey in such a high regard and haven’t worked with him in so long. It’s an honour to work alongside one of my mentors.”
