Stacey Broughton has released his first independent photographic collection, Big Country, and has shared his images with MyHairDressers.com. In this interview, he tells us the idea behind it.

Why did you decide to do a collection?
I really just wanted to do something for me. I’ve done and collaborated on collections for other people or companies, like Vidal Sassoon, but this was really something I wanted to do. I self financed it and it’s nice to have the freedom to do what I want without any restraints or expectations from above.

What’s the idea behind Big Country?
I wanted to do something controversial, so I chose guns, because they’re always a controversial issue. And girls with guns add to that even more.

I’ve always been a fan of the Wild West and the pioneering attitude and I was also inspired by the video game Red Dead Redemption. The women had to be strong, because it was a dangerous place and dangerous times. I wanted to balance that strength with something sexy and short hair is sexy. So the idea of blending the romance of the outlaw with totally different hair for modern strong women who have the independence to do what their hair really appeals to me.

The hair reflects the direction I’ve been exploring over recent months, with disconnection and short, angular geometrical panels. Other than one of the haircuts, each shape can be re-dressed to allow a different look or mood.

Do you have any more planned?
I want to do another one this year, when I have the money. I think it’s important to get the work down and preserved. It helps education and allows me to get the ideas across. It’s a visualisation of what’s in my head!

How has the response been?
It’s been amazing. The pictures have been featured on hairbrained.me and several magazines are interested, although that’s not why I did it. Someone came up to me the other day and said that one of the shots was the best she’d ever seen, which is a huge compliment.
