News - Spring Hairdressing Video Shoot Day 1

Text / Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 25 March 2011

The first day of the MyHairDressers.com video shoot started on Tuesday, with Stacey Broughton recording for the first time in twelve months. Stacey has spent much of the last year doing shows and workshops around the world as well as building his own website and designing his own branded scissors.

Stacey’s first day back at MyHairDressers.com was a challenge – producing two notoriously demanding and difficult shapes – the Halo and the Firefly. To push Stacey even further, he produced the cuts on headblocks!

We asked Stacey why he chose to do two such demanding haircuts for his Headblock Basic series. He told us, ”The Halo’s hard because when you cut hair from short to long it pushes it in that direction. So the line from the corner of the eye to the corner of the jaw is going down, so it makes the hair curl away from your scissor, and gravity pulls that angle down, so it’s difficult to achieve and balance. The hairline is not parallel to the line you’re cutting, so all those things are against you. But it’s a round shape that you need to know. It’s a strong discipline, and this version is to add the corners, so it fills in the holes on the surface of the neck and jaw line.

“The Firefly teaches you many essential skills. There’s a little bit of graduation, and it teaches you balance. You go from one side to the other to get this really cool asymmetric shape. It’s actually a round graduation and an asymmetrical layering system, so that’s why it’s such a great shape to learn. It also teaches you about how to build a shape and you work to the opposite shoulders.

“Some would say these are maybe old fashioned shapes, but I think they teach really essential skills that you can apply anywhere and if you cut them on the right person, they’ll look great anywhere – it’s all about suitability, a good Halo on the right head and face would stand out and just look fantastic!”

During the day, we were joined in the studio by upcoming educators and hairdressers Mazella and Palmer - two of the most exciting hairdressers in the UK, and worth looking out for in the future.

This week’s video shoot marks the first collaboration with a number of companies with whom MyHairDressers.com has recently partnered. The new salon has been beautifully fitted by Salon Ambience, whilst BaByliss Pro has supplied electrical products. Kent Brushes has provided all this week’s contributors with combs and brushes, whilst Easydry has given us a selection of their eco friendly towels and gowns. Make-up for our MUA Louisa Inchenko was supplied by Illamasqua.

All of our Health and Safety issues have been addressed by Renscene who supplied us with Barbicide and Trichocare's Colourstart, which allows us to safely carry out skin tests.

MyHairDressers.com would like to thank all of our partners for their invaluable help in making this video shoot the most well equipped ever and look forward to working with them all in the future.
