Release - Soft Textured Multi Level Shape

Text and Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Tuesday 10 July 2012

Mazella&Palmer's advanced creative tutorial uses four areas of sectioning, each of which builds to create a soft multi level look. Dove Palmer begins the haircut in the lower back area, using acute layering cut at a clearly illustrated 135 degree angle with even over-direction. This will start to build length towards the weak area of the hairline behind the ear and blend into the disconnected side section.

The mid-section is graduated following the head  on both sides towards the front and the top left-hand section is then lightly layered into this shape. This is a continuation of the rounded underneath shape and adds movement and texture.

Finally Dove works with a C-shape section through the top. He takes a horizontal section, elevates the hair to 90 degrees and cuts a layered line. The front is combed and over-directed to its extremity and connects to the back sections. This produces a dropping corner of weight on the left-hand side, helping the fringe to swing for soft flowing curls with offset expansion.

The end result is a heavy rounded shape with a subtle undercut and extreme length, finished with a colour palette reflective of the rich warmth of reds and oranges of the Biba emporium.
