John Vial’s session catwalk tutorial begins by preparing the hair with thickening lotion to the root area and mousse to the front hairline and mid-lengths to achieve the necessary hold. The hair is blow-dried using a round bristle brush ensuring the root area and cuticle are sufficiently dried directionally. Weft is then added to achieve length and density to the overall thatched look.

The shape is assessed to decide where to place texture in the mid-area to suit the bone structure of the cheeks and jaw line. A pin is placed approximately 4 cm from the top, and the hair is wound in a figure of eight Rick Rack technique leaving out the ends of the hair. Proceed up the head bringing each section down and placing the pin in the same position as the underneath pin and winding for the same length.

Finally, work from underneath the hair and brush out the hair to achieve the final result - a multi-textured shape featuring an expanse of hair through the sides against carefully balanced extended tendrils for a full-on, dramatic, editorial bonanza.
