Paul Phillips' salon basic colouring tutorial demonstrates a high quality application of a semi-permanent colour (vegetable colour), this technique can also be used to apply other non-permanent colours.

Following hair cleansing, the sectioning uses a hot cross bun format from the top of each ear, then from the centre front hairline to the centre nape area, resulting with four sections.

Begin on the right-hand side, starting in the nape working with fine horizontal sections up to the crown, with control of colour being the essential part of this technique. Once both back sections have been applied, the side areas are then worked with vertical sections towards and into the reverse back section again with control of product to the front hairline.

The result is a clean coverage of shade, to add depth to the texture of Stacey's simplistic shape and is an essential technique for all student hairdressers and assistants.
