ONLINE HAIRDRESSING TRAINING AND EDUCATION FROM THE WORLD'S BEST HAIRDRESSERS

Feature - Interview with ScissorBoy's Grant Romundt

Text / Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 11 March 2011

In this exclusive interview for MyHairDressers.com, ScissorBoy’s Grant Romundt shares his views on the studio day with Stacey Broughton and gives us insight into the ScissorBoy phenomenon.

How did it go today?

I think it was a really good first collaboration with MyHairDressers.com. We worked together really well, things flowed brilliantly, so it was easy – a piece of cake!

Tell us a little about
ScissorBoy?

We started our online TV series for hairstylists and every Monday we feature a top stylist on our show. We’re on to 111 episodes up to this week, with 50 stylists from the US, 50 from Canada and now 11 from London. Italy’s on the schedule, Australia’s on the schedule and we’re lining up a lot of different countries.

I started it because I wanted to be able to travel around the world, work, have fun and just live that life. It took a couple of years, but we’re doing it now!

How important is online hairdressing education?

I really think it’s the future, that’s why I started ScissorBoy. I think MyHairDressers.com and ScissorBoy were kind of early in the market, and now people are really getting it, internet speeds are getting faster and it’s more practical to have streaming video online. I know a lot of cosmetology schools are watching our programme now so it’s becoming a really important part of education and you can actually get to see amazing hairstylists showing off their skills. You can get in over the shoulder and see things you can’t normally see as a student. 10 years ago you couldn’t do that.

You have a slightly different approach to MyHairDressers, actually going into the salon, what do you think that brings to the audience?

We created the programme so we could give stylists an idea of what it’s like in other salons, not just their salons. So we wanted to showcase what other stylists are doing in other salons around the world. You get to see what other people are doing, and see other techniques. You might be doing the same technique for twenty years but seeing someone else do it in a slightly different way gives you more options or reminds you of something you no longer do and just brings it back, gives you a fresh perspective. We may show the same technique in ten different videos, but
every person may have their own move, or a different take.

Have you noticed a difference between cities and countries in their approach to hairdressing and fashion?

I think the stylists we’ve visited are pretty much the top of the top so we’re not seeing anything that’s not the very best. We seem to have a lot more of avant-garde styles in Canada, than in the US and the UK. I think there’s a feeling of trying to outdo each other in Canada, more competition, so I try to bring it back a little to something people can actually do.

There’s a lot more precision in London, so our shoots have been taking a lot longer than they do in the States, and Canada. Shoots that are normally 45 minutes in the states are two hours, maybe longer over here.

What do you think of MyHairDressers.com?

I think MyHairDressers.com is a brilliant resource and far ahead of the curve in terms of online learning. You made it available to everyone and every week you have inspiration coming to your computer. You don’t have to fly around the country, pay for hotels, meals and courses. It saves you thousands of dollars every week.
