Feature - Profile on Ross Kirton

Text by Callam Warrington / Images by Ross Kirton // Published Friday 9 March 2012

Every so often at MyHairDressers.com a talented individual flies across our radar. Ross Kirton is just that, a fashion/advertising photographer working successfully in the UK and New York. Ross's high-energy work crosses various boundaries as he moves seamlessly between fashion, beauty and celebrity portraiture.

Born in 1971, he grew up in the midst of a creative family. Immersed into the world of art from an early age, his mother is an artist and his father an architect, Ross was subject to their creative influences both figurative and pragmatic. Ross developed a passion for visual and creative expression from childhood with a fascination of and appreciation for the human form which remains the focus of his work today.

His aesthetic approach to his subjects means his work crosses over from art to editorial and highly celebrated portraiture. Some of Ross's celebrity sitters include Jamie Winstone, Diane Kruger, Daphne Guinness, Calvin Harris, Amy Winehouse, The Sugababes, Alison Goldfrapp, Faithless, Bruce Forsyth, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Keith Lemon, George Lamb, Graham Norton and David Walliams. More recently Ross has been experimenting with film and illustration.

Ross explains, "As a photographer my images are concerned with line, form, dynamic shapes and the interaction created between subject and surroundings. I am fascinated and passionate about the relationship between light and form. I strive to consistently bringing a high level of craftsmanship and creativity to a brief. My images communicate a both masculine and feminine power, bringing sensuality to the foreground through graphically dynamic poses and styling and a balance of softness and sensitivity through considered lighting."

Ross's work shows a passion and appreciation of the relationship between colour, form and texture originating from photographic fashion. Ross has worked for British Vogue, Tatler, British Elle, Arena, GQ, Harper's Bazaar, Sunday Times Style, V Magazine, DV Magazine, Volt Magazine, Clairol, Lynx, Agent Provocateur, Chanel, and Net a Porter brand advertising. Recently on assignment with super colourist and MyHairDressers.com contributor, Josh Wood, Ross has his finger on the beauty pulse. The result is a Behind the Chair cover, out next month, which Wood is really excited about.

A fashion match made in heaven we think.
