Bonus Release - Posture Recommendation

Text by Diana Leake // Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 30 December 2011

Osteopaths commonly see people experiencing musculoskeletal pain and as well as trying to alleviate their symptoms, they provide advice on exercise and lifestyle to help avoid symptoms reoccurring.

MyHairDressers.com is pleased to introduce this free bonus video from Diana Leake from Body Foundation Osteopaths to provide advice to people who may not have experienced any problems yet, as well as provide advice for those who might already be experiencing musculoskeletal problems.

A recent study found that hairdressers commonly experience muscle and joint pain more than the general population, which then identified a need to develop training that informs hairdressers of risks associated with their work. In New Zealand, the Department of Labour has published a document entitled Health and Safety in Hairdressing, which also identifies musculoskeletal problems as a risk to hairdressers.

The video identifies tasks which might lead to discomfort over time:

//Tasks that require awkward postures such as bending, twisting, reaching above shoulder level or bending the wrist

//Repetitive tasks that require the same groups of muscles and joints to be used over and over again

//Tasks that require you to maintain one position for a prolonged period

There are many tasks in hairdressing that can involve some or all of these factors so Diana advises what you can do to minimise the risk of being in pain or discomfort during your career.
