Feature - Increase Salon Business by Boosting Morale

Text/Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 21 January 2011

Without a doubt your hairdressing salon’s most valuable asset is your salon staff. Keeping your hair stylists, colourists, assistants and reception team happy will reflect back to your clients, engender client loyalty and ultimately make more money for your salon.

It’s easy as a busy salon or business owner to fail to see the signs when staff morale is slipping, but it’s so easy to keep your salon staff enjoying their hairdressing and ensuring a harmonious salon environment. Here are four easy ways that you can implement in your salon today to keep your staff happy and loyal to your hairdressing business.

1. Financial Incentives
The quickest way to make people better and make them happy is to offer financial incentives. This could be by encouraging them to introduce new clients or sell more retail and hair care products for example. In the present financial climate, it isn’t easy to find the money to offer pay rises, but commissions on sales or income you wouldn’t have had otherwise takes the sting out of it!

2. Social Incentives
People work happier and better when they have bonded with their workmates, so encourage your staff to spend time together outside of the salon. This could be by organising a simple after work drink every now and then, or a meal for everyone, particularly as a reward after a successful month. It will also make your staff feel appreciated and encourage loyalty. Team building days are available at local paint balling companies or go-karting, or why not try bowling? Make it fun.

3. Idle hands and all that
Keep your salon staff busy. There’s always something to do in a hairdressing salon, and staff standing around bored in quiet times not only encourages gossip and moaning, it makes the day longer, which encourages even more gossip and moaning! It’s a vicious circle. Make sure rotas are spread, so there’s no feelings of resentment. Encourage an all-in-it-together mentality so they feel valued and a part of a team and care about the future of the salon.

4. Encourage hairdressing training
Hairdressers love learning the latest techniques, hair styles or colours. Encourage your salon team to learn more, so they earn more. Put a laptop in the staff room, with MyHairDressers.com videos playing and have head blocks available for them to practice on in their down time. Make sure you hold weekly training sessions - you can even project MyHairDressers.com onto a screen for your trainee stylists and assistants to practice together.

The steps we’ve outlined are really easy to implement but can make a massive difference to you, your staff and your business. Best of all they are all inexpensive, compared with the potential revenue boost your business can gain.
