Release - Salon Basic Men's Haircut

Text and Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Tuesday 3 April 2011

Dale Ted Watkins' salon basic men's haircut is a progression from Dale's previous two haircuts on Curtis. Dale utilises the shape in the sides from the short back and sides look. He works a scissors-over comb crop throughout the top, working with the head shape and scissors-over-comb against the grain of the hair growth. Dale's scissor movement runs parallel to the comb and the blades are worked with quick wide motions throughout these panels to establish a guide for the rest of the top area.

Dale connects the side areas with the top, placing his comb parallel to the head. This internal curve, following the head shape, gets progressively longer over the parietal ridge and then rounds into the guide in the top panels, also working over the crown area. The key is to work against the grain of the hair growth for an even shape to achieve a classic Suedehead; essentially a long crop - formal, cool and edgy with overtones of 1970s UK popular culture.
