ONLINE HAIRDRESSING TRAINING AND EDUCATION FROM THE WORLD'S BEST HAIRDRESSERS

News - Dale Ted Watkins Photoshoot

Text and Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 16 December 2011

Dale Ted Watkins was back in the MyHairDressers.com studio last weekend to art direct a photographic collection for new barbershop Harry Green Barbers. MyHairDressers.com's in-house photographer Jamie Harrison shot the images, with eight models all sporting a variety of hairstyles reflective of traditional barbering techniques and dressing. Harry is an ex student of Dale's, via his City Boy education services and is set to open the new barbershop in the New Year. Dale has been mentoring him in preparation and, as it was Harry's first photoshoot, Dale was on hand to offer guidance and assist him in achieving his goal.

The collection takes its cue from classic British gangsters, both fictional and non fictional from the 1940s and onwards, including the iconic images of The Kray Twins by David Bailey, Richard Attenborough as Pinky in the 1947 classic film Brighton Rock and Christopher Ecclestone as Derek Bentley in Let Him Have It

Dale told us, "We wanted a stark, tough look - something evocative of the demob hairstyles from the 1940s and on to the rise of British gangsters through the 1950s and on. We really wanted to express a masculinity and style that demonstrates the strength of classic barbering compared to the softer looks that have developed since the 1960s. These were tough men who'd fought in the war, or been raised in austerity and knew tough times but still made an effort to look good."

"I love the pictures that Jamie has taken, they're simple but really strong and the boys all look amazing."

Jamie said, "Once Harry and Dale explained the concept, I encouraged the lads to give me a feeling of aggression and danger and they did a great job, especially as they are not professional models. I finished the images to look like they'd been printed on Agfa Brovira paper to give them that authentic period look."

Harry told us, "Wow! What a fantastic day at the MyHairDressers.com studio for our first promotional shoot. I want to give a massive thank you to all those that made it happen, Dale Ted Watkins, Jamie Harrison, Christina Blythe, Peter Brenchley, Jack Et, Ryan Peacher, Chris French, Ben Munday, Perry Graves, Sagz Patel, Chaz Beckett and Rhys Green. The photographs look amazing."
