Feature - Charmaine Piche Interview

Text / Images by Jamie Harrison // Published Friday 15 January 2011

This week sees the release of Charmaine Piche’s first colour tutorial for MyHairDressers.com, Pure Veils of Colour Part 1. As Colour Director for Saco, Charmaine works closely with Richard Ashforth and is integral in developing and forwarding the company’s hair collections, style and philosophy. Charmaine is constantly on the go, travelling between the various Saco salons around the world and presenting at hair shows from London to Paris to Brazil.

In this exclusive interview with MyHairDressers.com, Charmaine shares her attitudes and philosophy to hair colouring.

From where do you draw your inspiration for your hair colouring?

I‘m inspired by what’s around me. You have to be open to what you’re seeing. I look at things in the simplest form. I’m always exploring new colour pallets, or interesting colour combinations, and that could be drawn from anything. At the moment I’m studying colour analysis, which is something as colour technicians in the 1980s we all steered away from, mainly because we didn’t understand it. But now I’ve really got my head around it and found it an essential tool to have for hair colouring. It basically takes into consideration skin tones and eye colour which are unique to everybody and looking at warm and cool tones, working on which colours you should and shouldn’t be wearing, make-up-wise, hair-wise, clothes-wise – everything. It’s really interesting and I’m absolutely enjoying it.

Who are your influences, either in hairdressing or outside of it?

I can’t think of a specific person that I’d say influences me. I suppose I work the way my father (sculptor and teacher Roland Piche) works with his sculpture -  it’s based on very simple, very traditional techniques – simple, non fussy and easy to understand. I always think about what I want to achieve and then find the best or right technique to go about it. I live by that rule in everything I do, so I don’t really think there’s a person that really influences me in that way.

What’s your favourite hairdressing technique?

My favourite is a technique that I actually developed at Sassoon’s and never got the credit for - back-to-back slicing, I did it with a girl who was a fantastic art director. We did a whole head in black and white and just used bleach and black and didn’t leave any hair out. It was the start of the back-to-back technique and I now use it in lots of different ways all the time. It’s a really versatile technique. I use it to go from to dark to light, or with two colours or three colours. The idea is to not leave any hair out in between and it’s just a really good technique for salon work and for creative hairdressing.

Do you have a favourite hairdressing product or tool?

My favourite product in the world is Crazy Colour. Although it’s really old, it’s a fantastic product and other companies have tried to develop similar products but they’re just not as good. It’s just so versatile. The second is Kerastase - again other hair product companies have tried to come close but it’s never as good. It’s just a fantastic product.

What top tips can you share with someone starting out or wishing to progress in hairdressing?

Don’t think that salon work is boring because it’s not. In my field, toning hair with a grey tint to brown or blonde is a lot harder than toning someone’s hair bright red or blue. I also think you need to educate yourself, and practice, practice, practice to become really good at whatever you want to do. The key is education.

What’s your opinion of online hairdressing training and MyHairDressers.com?

Online hairdressing education is a brilliant new concept. There’s a lot of hairdressers out there that haven’t the time or the money to go on hairdressing courses. I’ve learned loads from the Internet in terms of hairdressing and continue to do so, I’m always looking on there. I think MyHairDressers.com is a fantastic tool, it’s brilliant!
